Vermont Soil Carbon Challenge kickoff

Three Springs Farm in Waitsfield is kicking off The Soil Carbon Challenge for Vermont on Friday, October 21, 2011. Come by at 5:00pm to have a beer and hear about the Challenge, learn a bit about the biological carbon cycle and the specific strategies for growing soil and soil carbon being employed by Three Springs Farm. And for those interested in the nuts & bolts of the soil carbon sampling process, come early at 2:00pm to participate in the field sampling. Read on to learn more.

The Soil Carbon Challenge is an international as well as local competition, engaging people in the opportunity of turning atmospheric carbon into water-holding, fertility-enhancing soil organic matter and advancing the practice of doing so.

Peter Donovan of the Soil Carbon Coalition is traveling for the next year to farms and ranches across the United States, Canada, and Mexico who are participating in the Challenge. We are lucky to have Mr. Donovan passing through Vermont, providing us with a unique opportunity to get plugged in to the agricultural and ecological innovation being fostered by the Soil Carbon Challenge.

Three Springs Farm is participating in the program to focus, measure and intensify our practice of growing soil through biological methods. We are happy to share everything we are learning as a part of our soil growing work with anyone interested.

Some of the reasons we are focused work on growing soil and which may also interest you:

Rapid top soil formation / rapid soil depth increases
Increased soil fertility
Increased grass and fodder production
Increased herd sizes on the same piece of land
Reduced reliance on soil inputs
Organic, regenerative, sustainable soil fertility techniques
Climate change mitigation - Decreased atmospheric carbon by sequestering carbon in soil in form a soil fertility

The Vermont Soil Carbon Challenge Kick-off event will consist of the hands-on soil sampling from 2:00pm - 4:30pm. At 5:00pm Peter Donovan will give an overview of the challenge and the biological carbon cycle and Stan Ward of Three Springs Farm will give an overview of the soil growing / carbon sequestration work planned for Three Springs Farm.

Light snacks, beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided during the discussion part of the event, starting at 5:00pm.
