Rosebud mine

A paper presented at a 2003 Land Reclamation Symposium in Billings, MT reports on a coal mine reclamation. Soil stockpiled for 14 years was respread, mulched, and reseeded, and researchers took soil samples to 15 cm depth. These samples averaged 1.09% organic carbon (Walkley-Black test), and 19 years later they averaged 2.05%, a 3.4% annual increase. Neighboring undisturbed soils remained at about 1.5% organic carbon throughout, making coal dust an unlikely source for the carbon accumulation.
