Rodale Institute Farming Systems Trial

Rodale Institute's Farming Systems Trial is the longest-running side-by-side comparison of organic and conventional farming systems in the U.S. The results of this trial amply confirm the potential of organic agricultural practices to grow soil carbon.

In the Compost Utilization Trial, the organic plots were amended with compost and/or manure. The best results were obtained with use of composted manure and cover crops.

By contrast, the plots under standard tillage with chemical fertilizers lost about a third of a ton of C per hectare per year.
