Blackstone Ranch, Questa pasture

The Questa pasture of the Blackstone Ranch (headquartered in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico) reported a spectacular 1-year gain in average organic matter from 2008 to 2009, from 1% organic matter to 1.9%, according to test results from New Mexico State University reported in Holistic Management International's journal, In Practice (March/April 2010). Soil surface monitoring showed that during the same period, plant spacing decreased from 3.51 inches to 2.92 inches, approximately a 25% decrease in bare ground.

Managers increased stock density by 220%. This is the degree of concentration of cattle, which gives better recovery periods for the grass as well as increased trampling, dunging, urinating during a shorter period. There was an estimated 300% increase in production over the whole grazing operation.
