Grass fed beef is best

according to a recent report by the National Trust in the UK. The report uses modeling.

"Research reveals that grass-fed beef is better for people and the environment. Feeding cattle on grass throughout their lifecycle is the most environmentally sustainable way to rear beef, according to new research we've commissioned."

"The results are contrary to recent thinking that livestock farming methods must intensify further in order to lessen carbon emissions to feed an ever-increasing world population."

"The debate about climate change and food often calls for a reduction of meat consumption and a more plant based diet, but this often overlooks the fact that many grasslands are unsuitable for continuous arable cropping."

"Grasslands support a range of ecosystems services including water resources, biodiversity and carbon capture and storage. Grazing livestock not only contributes to their maintenance but also turns grass into human-edible food."

My heartfelt thanks to the team at National Trust for putting a bit of science behind the common sense reality that cows on grass are not “bad”.
Most of our planet's grasslands are in seasonally dry or semi-arid eco-systems. Ruminants in grassland regions cycle carbon trapped in otherwise lignifying grasses. In their absence this dry and senescent grass will be cycled the only other way Nature can, which is by fire.
Data from Australia’s CSIRO indicates that a grass fire is up to 3.6 times more GHG intensive than a cow for the same amount of plant material.
Think about this logically - if Nature got cows "wrong" then it also got giraffes, camels, bison, wildebeest, llamas, and all 90+ species of antelope "wrong".
In short ruminant animals are Nature's preferred way of cycling carbon and other nutrients in a grassland eco-system.
